As a child growing up in the Detroit area in the 1960s, Richard A. Young was influenced by hot rod culture, Mouse/Kelly studios, D.H. Lawrence and early science fiction films. He holds a B.F.A. with honors from Northern Michigan University, an M.A. in Art Education from Boise State University and an M.F.A. from Washington State University.

Young served as Chair of the Art Department (2003 – 2013) and Gallery Director of the Boise State Visual Arts Center (1994 - 2012) organizing numerous national and international exhibitions. As Curator of Education for Boise Art Museum and Artist in Residence/Master Teacher for the State Department of Education, he worked with teachers and students in over 60 elementary schools in Southwest Idaho. Young has also served as commissioner for the City of Boise, Department of Arts and History, memberat- large for the Idaho Commission on the Arts and trustee of Boise Art Museum. He is currently Professor of Painting at Boise State University where he serves as Chair of the University Art Collections committee.

Richard Young’s paintings and drawings stem from three primary investigations: an analysis of 19th century painted representations of nature, an inquiry into media/process as conveyor of meaning, and the use of irony and humor to suggest psychological and philosophical dilemmas. In addition to exhibiting throughout the country, Young’s work is included in many private and corporate collections including the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon and the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan.
