Hands on art lessons in your classrooms
ARTworks is an Art Museum program designed to take hands-on art lessons into classrooms across the eastern Idaho region. Since starting the program, we have taken art lessons to over 600 classrooms in six school districts throughout eastern Idaho, reaching over 15,000 students.
 
AW_artworks2016web.jpg   Lessons are related to museum exhibits and provide hands-on exploration of 2- or 3-dimensional art processes, art history, art appreciation and technical instruction.

After the classroom lesson, classes are invited to visit the museum for a follow-up exhibit tour and related art lesson. Limited busing scholarships are available.

To schedule a classroom visit, please complete the Classroom Visit Request Form and return it to TAM by email.

Exhibit Based Lessons 2019 - 2020
Third & Fourth Grade

EXHIBIT Lesson: Landscape in Clay

Drawing inspiration from the diverse work of Idaho artists showcased in the ART Idaho exhibit, students will learn how artists use perspective in painting to create their own landscape relief in clay focused on the symbols that represent our state, including the plants and animals that are unique to Idaho landscape.
This lesson is available October - December 2019.
Suggested time frame 2.5 hours

 

EXHIBIT Lesson: Visual Storytelling

Painter Archie Teater’s work tells the story of the west. Drawing inspiration for Teater’s painterly style, students will explore painting on canvas using palette knives to create a work of art that tells their own story of the west.
This lesson is available January - May 2020

AFTER YOU SCHEDULE:

Pre-Visit Primer
You will receive an e-mail confirming our visit. This e-mail will include an image that will be highlighted in our lesson. Please take a few minutes to share this image with your students and have a short discussion prompted by the three simple VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) questions included in the message to build interest and curiosity about the upcoming lesson.

ARTworks Outreach Classroom Visit
When we visit your classroom a museum artist instructor will provide a lesson overview and student rubric that will be used throughout the lesson.

Students will learn about an artist and art process, then engage in a compare-and-contrast discussion about the works.

Students will apply ideas from the discussion in a hands-on art-making process. Problem solving and personal expression are encouraged!

After completing the lesson, the class will engage in a group critique of finished artwork. The instructor will revisit the rubric with the students to evaluate student learning.

You will receive a lesson evaluation form via e-mail from the museum Education Director, Alexa Stanger, inviting you to provide valuable feedback.
