CREATE A FOIL RELIEF


A RELIEF is a sculptural technique consisting of shapes attached to a surface so as to stand out from the surrounding background. The term relief is from the Latin verb relevo meaning "to raise."

SUPPLY BOX
  • Piece of cardboard
  • Elmer's glue
  • Aluminum foil
  • Paint brush
  • Markers, assorted colors
  • Paper towel
  • Assorted materials such as straws, bottle caps, plastic lids, string, nuts, washers, various shapes of cardboard scraps
DESIGN A RELIEF

Arrange the assorted materials on the piece of cardboard. Experiment with pattern, texture and the layering of smaller objects on top of larger objects.

GLUE YOUR DESIGN

Use glue to attach the assorted materials onto the cardboard. Set aside to dry.

ADD FOIL

Spread a thin layer of glue over the surface of your design using a brush. Cover the glued surface with a sheet of crinkled foil. Wrap the excess foil over the end of the cardboard on all four sides. Use your fingers to rub and smooth the foil.

ADD COLOR TO YOUR DESIGN

Use markers to add color to your design.
